Procedures: Tattoo Removal

How does tattoo removal work?

Although there are other methods, such as cryosurgery and dermabrasion, the most effective is laser tattoo removal. Intense beams of light penetrate the skin and break down pigments, allowing the design to fade over time. How many sessions you will need to achieve the desired result is dependent on the size, location, age, and color(s) of the tattoo.

Tattoo Removal

Different types of lasers have been engineered to break down the pigments of specific colors. The light produced by the lasers is harmless and only targets tattooed parts of the skin, leaving pigment-free skin untouched. As the pigments break down, the immune system gradually removes them from the body and the affected areas heal. For this reason, we will typically schedule sessions three weeks apart.

Radiation Tattoos

Women who have breast radiation are often given radiation tattoos. This helps the technician accurately aim radiation at the treatment area. We offer complimentary radiation tattoo removal on the chest and upper abdomen for breast cancer survivors.

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

Laser Tattoo

The level of discomfort you will feel during the laser removal process will vary depending on the location, color, size, and age of the tattoo. It can be painful due to the heat produced by the laser, especially for larger pieces in certain locations. Over the counter medications (excluding aspirin due to the potential for bruising) and local anesthetic can help manage the discomfort.

What are the side effects of laser tattoo removal?

Laser equipment continues to be improved and engineered for the best possible results, but even so, there are potential side effects you should keep in mind. The most serious is the risk of infection and tattoo removal scars. Take precautions by covering the affected area with a bandage, keeping it clean, and applying ointment. There is also a risk for changes in pigmentation surrounding the treated area and blistering following treatment sessions. Some autoimmune conditions may increase your chance of complications.
