Procedures: PRP Therapy

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP is in acronym for Platelet Rich Plasma which is a concentrated mixture of platelets derived from your own blood. Platelets are known to be a rich source of proteins called growth factors which stimulate and rejuvenate various kinds of tissue. It has been used for close to 20 years for injections into joints. More recently it has been found to be very beneficial for skin and even more recently for rejuvenating hair.

What is the procedure for PRP treatment?

Obtaining the PRP is a simple office procedure. We draw some blood into a special tube which is then placed in a centrifuge. The blood is then separated so that we get a concentrated solution of platelets. That solution (known as PRP) can then be used in various ways on the skin or injected around the roots of the hair to stimulate hair growth.

What is the outcome from PRP Treatment?

On the skin, we can see improved skin complexion, texture and tone. The skin looks more vibrant and young looking with fine lines and wrinkles softened and smoothed. The results are usually seen in about 3 weeks and will gradually improve over time. The PRP can be injected into the skin or more commonly is combined with microneedling but can be used with laser to augment the effects of the laser treatments.

For the hair, studies have shown that 60-80% of patients with androgenic hair loss will see improvement in their hair thickness. Results can be seen within weeks but generally take 3-6 months.
