Procedures: Naturopathic Medicine

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

The basis of naturopathic medicine is the belief that the human body has an innate healing ability. Naturopathic doctors educate patients emphasizing prevention through the use of diet, exercise, lifestyle changes and cutting edge natural therapies to improve the bodies’ ability to ward off and combat disease.

When evaluating a patient, each person is viewed as a complex, interrelated system, not as an individual medical disease. Naturopathic doctors craft comprehensive treatment plans that combine traditional medical approaches with the best of modern medical science to not only treat disease but to also restore health.

Our bodies have such a powerful, inborn instinct to heal itself. By identifying and removing the barriers to this self-healing—such as poor diet or unhealthy habits—naturopathic physicians can nurture this process. Her undergraduate degree is from Tufts University. She has nearly twenty years of clinical experience. The Naturopathic process:

Step 1 - Understanding Causes: Naturopathic physicians understand that addressing the root of an illness is vital to prevention of recurring symptoms.
Step 2 - Goal Setting: Naturopathic professionals believe in the use of healing compounds and low-risk procedures —such as dietary supplements, herbal extracts, and homeopathy—with the goal of few or no side effects.
Step 3 - Adapting New Habits: We encourage patients to avoid suppression of their symptoms, which often signifies the body’s efforts to self-heal. For example, the body may cook up a fever in reaction to a bacterial infection. Fever creates an inhospitable environment for the harmful bacteria, thereby destroying it. Of course, the naturopathic physician would not allow the fever to get dangerously high.
Step 4 - Customized Plan: We will customize a diagnosis and treatment plan to fit each patient. We all heal in different ways, and the naturopathic physician respects our differences.
Step 5 - Education: Naturopathic medicine believes that doctors must be educators, as well as physicians. That’s why naturopathic physicians teach their patients how to eat, exercise, relax and nurture themselves physically and emotionally. They also encourage self-responsibility and work closely with each patient.
Step 6 - Treatment: We each have a unique genetic, physical, environmental, social, and psycho-emotional makeup. The naturopathic physician knows that all these factors affect our health and includes them in a carefully tailored treatment strategy.
Step 7 - Illness Prevention: Proactive medicine saves money, pain, misery, and lives. That’s why naturopathic physicians evaluate risk factors, heredity, and vulnerability to disease. By getting treatment for greater wellness, we’re less likely to need treatment for future illness.
