What is the procedure?
The Photofacial BBL and Forever Young BBL treatment is a broadband light that is attracted to the dark pigmentation of brown discoloration on the skin. This light draws it towards the surface of the skin and eventually out altogether. When treating redness the laser setting is attracted to the hemoglobin and heats up the tiny vessels to the point where they collapse and the blood retreats. This provides a clearer, smoother complexion which will smooth out your skin tone and improve texture.
Who is it for?
The Photofacial BBL and Forever Young BBL treatments are for patients who are wanting to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, veins, redness, sun damage and improve the texture of their skin.
What to expect during the procedure?
During your initial visit to our office, we will examine your skin damage, confirm that BBL is appropriate for your skin and recommend treatment options. Prior to treatment skin is washed, eye protection is put in place and a cool, clear gel is applied to the area to be treated. The BBL beam of light is then pulsed slowly and uniformly over the entire area. Treatments can last 30 to 45 minutes for the full face and can feel like mild rubber band snapping. A cooling air is also applied to make the treatment more comfortable. Once the area is treated and cooled, the gel is washed off and finishing lotion and sunscreen are applied. We initially recommend 4 or more BBL correction treatments spaced out once a month. Follow up with Forever Young maintenance treatments are then recommended in the fall, winter, and spring to maintain results as your skin is exposed to the elements. Treatments can be performed on the full face, central face, neck, chest, back of hands and arms.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
We initially recommend a correction series of 4 or more treatments depending on the amount of damage. Once the initial correction series has reduced any damage we recommend a follow up with Forever Young BBL maintenance treatments 2-3x a year.
How is recovery?
You may experience slight to moderate redness but this will dissipate as the day goes on; it is easily covered with makeup if you are prone to flushing. After treating redness or blood vessels, the skin can be slightly pink and some larger vessels may turn dark red or bruise for a few days. It’s important to develop a daily regimen with recommended products. Being consistent with your home care will give you the best results. Swelling may occur and can last several days, bruising has been known to happen with patients who have lots of telangiectasia. Your brown spots will get darker in color, may look like coffee grounds and can last week up to 2 weeks. We recommend that you avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks prior to BBL treatments. This is true of sunless tanning, avoiding tanning beds as well as sunless tanning creams prior to treatment. We want to ensure that you receive the best outcome from treatment and receiving treatment on any area exposed is counter-productive.
