Conditions: Acne

What is Acne?

Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. It all begins with a blockage of the pores underneath the skin resulting in the trapping of oils and bacteria. The trapped oils and bacteria cause small bumps which we recognize as blackheads. If there is enough inflammation, the result is the formation of pimples, and it can lead to scarring. The main cause of acne is thought to be genetic. Diet plays a role, though the extent varies in each individual. In general, a lack of cleanliness or the use of makeup is not the cause of acne.

What are the risks of not treating acne?

Not treating or inadequately treating acne can mean years of recurring acne lesions which can lead to long-term discoloration and permanent scarring. Acne is a frequent cause of anxiety and reduced self-esteem. There are many effective treatments available for acne today. There is evidence that suggests the earlier the acne is treated, the better. Early treatment can go a long way to preventing scarring and significantly boost self-esteem.

Acne solutions provided by Dermatology Associates of Seattle:

Isotretinoin: Isotretinoin, a derivative of vitamin A, works by reducing the size and activity of the oily sebaceous glands which is where acne starts. When administered by one of our board-certified dermatologists or experienced PA's, isotretinoin can be used to eliminate treatment-resistant or severe acne so that no further therapy may be needed for years to come.
Laser treatment: Dermatology Associates of Seattle offers a host of state-of-the-art lasers for various skin conditions. Therapies are a combination of vacuum and IPL light to drain plugged or congested pores and to help with the reduction of bacteria. Laser Genesis can be used to reduce the amount of redness and scarring left over from acne. BBL light treatments are very effective at reducing active acne, especially in those patients who can’t or choose not to use prescription medications.
Scar Treatment: At Dermatology Associates of Seattle, we have found that Infini treatments are the quickest and most effective way to deal with post acne scarring. Treatment is a combination of micro needling and radiofrequency. Laser treatments such as Fraxel are still available and for many years were the gold standard of treatment. Healing time, with these procedures, is very rapid with little or no downtime.
Clinical trials: Dermatology Associates of Seattle is an active treatment research Center. We are always looking to enroll patients in various clinical trials studying new treatments for various skin diseases. Please call for more information if you’re interested.
